OK so the most important fact is that this is still in development and is due to be released SEPTEMBER 2010.

If your a Civ fanatic like me then you know how I feel. I was actually looking for links to post in the COD-WaW forums when I noticed a strange but familiar commercial flashing on my screen on the right hand side. It lead me to the [url=httpwww.civilization5.com]CIV5 website[url] that has a trailer and a small handful of screen-shots. Before I had even got through 30% buffering of the trailer my wife was in disbelief and scorning me as though I was looking up some X rated site. It was too late... I had my headphones on and was focused only on the graphics in front of me. The crying of a newborn baby and the singing of wake up geoff on the ABC was drowned out by the hypnotic feel of the music that has brought a shiver to my spine since the early 90's when I first got hooked on CIV.

I've already trolled though everything that has been released so far. Basically there was a presentation at Firaxis where the developers showed off what they had so far and gave a sneak peak at some new refinements that are expected.

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/7869/64692035.jpg

The major change is to the tiles. Gone are the awkward squares with chunky graphics and diagonal movements. CIV 5 will feature hexagon tiles that apparently allow smother integration of the terrain and fix the glitches of being able to move land and sea over the same area. I'm definitely looking forward to the hexagon tiles.

Gone are the days of stacking military units on top of one another. Only one unit is allowed per tile although the value of the units will change dramatically. Like in CIV 4, units will level up to veterans with special abilities as they win battles.

There will be no city units. City's will need to be defended outside the walls and city's will fight back depending on their size and health.

No more swapping tech, instead you invest into research agreements with other Civ's.

They have described an enhanced notification system where it's all tucked away neatly in the corner available during your turn. Click on a notification and it will take you to the tile (eg. enemy units).

There will be city states. There will be independent city's that you can either conquer or alliance with. They will be able to assist you with military units during wars and will have some financial value.

It's been 5 years since CIV 4 was released. I will be waiting anxiously for September to come around. I made the mistake of pre-ordering CIV4 from Canada back in 2005. Turns out the game was available in the store 24hrs before mine actually arrived in the post.

True stategy building games certainly have clans who complete against one another. Downside is majority are 1 vrs 1 but some have 4 vrs 4 etc based around the battles only.
Games under this banner include:
- 'Civilisation' series
- 'Total War' series
- 'Anno' series

Sweet, My style of game. Hopefully its not a dummed down cartoon version like Civ4 was.
C&C4 was like that too, they took a great game and turned it into a console port thats very much a sandbox game, hopefully the same will not happen with Civ

Whats new/better in the gameplay? Is it the same old same old with better gfx and a few tweaks to how things work? I never got as far as civ4 but all civs before had this horrible habit of becoming micro-management nightmares in the late states.

Great review btw xXx, enjoyed the read :)/>

the graphics will be smoother because you won't have the checker board grid style of design. the hex tiles should make the terrain flow better.

as for game play it looks like they have done away with the religion stuff they introduced in CIV4 and brought in the city states idea instead.

i think there will still be heaps of micro managing late in the game. now that you can't stack units i think war's will have to be planned out well in advanced. between figuring out the defensive bonuses in the terrain and where the bombarding archers are loctaed... it's going to be epic !

i think the sneak peak was just to get the commuinity talking about what they do and don't want in the game. i don't think anybody has a clear view of what the end product will look like yet.

Well haing bought and played it for a few days, mixed reaction
the graphics upgrade is nice though it's pretty much just like Revolution was on the PS3 but on a bigger scale.
in fact the whole game just feels like PS3 Civ 4 Revolution, a dumd down version on what was a classic strategy game

Damn you console generation who want quick games that you can win in 10mins and at most a few hrs.

you can't stack units anymore which makes moving them about a nightmare.
and can't move from a city if something is garrisoned there so have to move that first b4 any other units can move. STUPID!!!!

length options, you have 3 choices, either
* take forever to build anything while the AI builds quick but stagnates at the midpoint of the ages you are playing through
* build quick and the AI builds really quick. to be epected since any game standard AI can do everyone at once.

Issues with attacking cities even with tough armies, it can still take forever and when you finally do the AI can usually take it straight back if it's not defended right off the bat

AI tends to build army units over anything else but somehow still manages to improve there cities.

unlike previous Civs you now need to decide what a given city really needs cost wise, if you jsut build every iomprovement in every town they will generally sit in starvation state for decades. and unlike previous version you can't sell back improvements you don't want anymore.

Good parts
The game is moddable and offers support and guidance to modding it. and in game you can download the mods and apply them
one issue atm though is if you don't have steam folder and subsequently the game installed on the C Drive the mods won't show and don't work anyway
can buy upgrades though it's costly
graphics are nice, bit cute

Bad parts
use of Steam network
long intro load time, even with it disabled
clunky controls
poor unit management
AI armies are usually stronger, even with weaker units
has bugs, like if you get to turn 570 which is yr 2080 the game just hangs
turn timer and years don't coincide, so one turn is like 10-15 yrs
can be building something that sais it wil take 10 turns, 15turns later it's still not complete
can't speed up the current build item by paying, only an engineer can speed it up
Warning. the game requires use of Steam. Don't Have A Choice. but does offer a stats page as a result with achivements unlocked listed. not that they do anything they are purely for looks.
Dumped religions/government types for a more generic selection of 8 5 step societly upgrade thingies. (lost thought as to what they were called :)/> but it takes a while to unlock the points to spend on each anyway
Research goes by too quick
city upgrades lst has been heavily reduced from previous versions. and hardly any that give food bonuses which is what you need the most
workers on auto turn every square they can into a trade square which is not good

Man this is depressing LOL may aswell end it here and let everyone see forthereselves, overall the game seems too dumb and more like a console port than a strategy game for the PC. It's not horrible but it's certainly not Civ 3 or 4 which were alot better.

i just started playing it. will reserve my judgment for now. initially, there certainly are some moves away from some of the more "traditional" aspects of the series.

not hating it tho :)/>

civ 4 was a bit different to the traditional civ games but the improvement of graphics made it worth the game play. i defiantly prefer civ 5 compared to 4.

havn't tried multi player mode yet but i have holidays coming up in december so prob going to wait till then to try that out if i'm not ranking up in COD Black Ops.
